National Holocaust Museum

Amsterdam opened the National Holocaust Museum on May 16th, 2016 based in the former Reformed Teacher Training College on the Plantage Middenlaan in Amsterdam. In the heart of Amsterdam,  within less than one square kilometer, you will find the old Jewish quarter. It is here where you can discover the Jewish Cultural Quarter of Amsterdam with synagogues, impressive monuments and buildings. Five cultural institutions such as the Jewish Historical Museum, JHM Children’s Museum, the Hollandsche Schouwburg, the Portuguese Synagogue and the National Holocaust Museum will provide you an unique overview of the Jewish life in the Netherlands.

The National Holocaust Museum is still being set up, will be established in two phases and should be ready in three years. Fundraising is needed to carry out the second phase and an amount of 19 million is needed to finalize both phases. However the General Manager of the National Holocaust Museum is confident. As far as now there is no place where the whole story is told of the destruction of the Jews in the Netherlands. The final  National Holocaust Museum will tell the complete history of Dutch Holocaust in a broad international context but will also address related issues such as genocide, integration of minorities, anti-Semitism and the violation of human rights and international law. When you are intending to visit one of the above mentioned cultural institutes we advise you to buy your ticket(s) at the Jewish Cultural Quarter. This ticket will give you access to all the mentioned locations by one ticket. This ticket will be valid for one month. The first exhibition and opening exhibition is “ The demise of Abraham Reiss “ of artist Jeroen Krabbé about his grandfather.
