Amsterdam Canals

Amsterdam is the Capital of the Netherlands and is the largest municipality and has about 835.000 inhabitants. The population consists of the most different nationalities of the world.

Amsterdam was founded in the year 1250 with the construction of the Dam.

The Amsterdam Canals consisting of the Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht are listed on the famous World heritage List as from August 1st, 2010.

As from the start water management, transport and defense played an important role. Drainage was even more important. But the main function of the canals was water management.

In the 17th century a start was made to increase the urban space of Amsterdam. Part of that in 1613 the canals were dug at first to the Leidsegracht and as from 1656 the canals were extended till the Amstel. By  completion of the Amsterdam Canal-project  the Amsterdam city-center became his present form. During the 17th century the population grew from 50.000 to 200.000 inhabitants.

The Keizersgracht was named after Emperor Maximilian of Austria. A very famous attraction is the Amsterdam Canal Tour with over 3 million passengers a year. The fleet of 200 boats offers you a great Amsterdam Canal Tour.
